DESCRIPTION

1968 Triumph TR5 2500 PI manual / overdrive. Valencia Blue with Tan Leather upholstery and a Surrey top. The Triumph TR5 is a sports car built by the Triumph Motor Company in Coventry, England, between August 1967 and September 1968. Visually similar to the TR4 (also styled by Michelotti), the TR5 roadster sported Triumph's much more powerful 2.5-litre straight-6, fitted with Lucas mechanical fuel-injection and producing 150 bhp. Price pressures and tighter emissions standards in the U.S. resulted in a much less powerful carburetted version, the TR250, being sold on the North American market. At the time, fuel injection was uncommon in road cars. Triumph claimed in their sales brochure that it was the "First British production sports car with petrol injection". Standard equipment included front disc brakes, independent rear suspension, rack and pinion steering and a four speed gearbox. Optional extras included overdrive and wire wheels. In 1968 the basic price of the TR5 in the UK was £1,260 including taxes, with wire wheels being another £38, overdrive £60 and a tonneau cover another £13. The fuel-injected engine could propel the TR5 from 0–50 mph in 6.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 125 mph. The TR5 was produced in small numbers when compared with the later TR6, with just 2,947 units produced; the first car was assembled on 29 August 1967 and the last on 19 September 1968. Of these, 1,161 were destined for the UK market, the remainder were left hand drive and were exported to France, Belgium and Germany amongst other countries. This beautiful TR5 was subject to a total body off restoration in 1996 and is still in stunning order today with a large portfolio of photographs and receipts detailing the restoration and the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate. The history file also contains the original green log book and owners manual as well as a huge amount of bills and invoices dating back to 1976. It is an original UK supplied matching numbers right hand drive car and is well known to very respected TR Historian Roger Ferris. The cars underside is fully body coloured as are all wheel arches. The TR5 features many upgrades which have also improved the car to include a very rare aluminium Surrey top, Moss leather seats, Knock on Minilite alloy wheels, Spax suspension and a Bosch fuel pump. An expensive option that greatly added to the appeal of the TR5 was the unique ‘Surrey’ top, a versatile hardtop arrangement consisting of an aluminium frame with a fixed rear window, a detachable metal roof panel and a simple soft-top for emergency use when the centre panel was removed. Available new or as an aftermarket option, the ‘Surrey’ topped TR5s are in great demand today. Stylish, sporting and individualistic. This Triumph belonged to a prolific collector and is only available due to a change in circumstances. This car has not been offered for sale for many years and is fresh to the U.K market. Its high standard and reliability were confirmed on a recent test by ourselves with the TR performing and handling exceptionally well, so far as to say its probably the best we have driven. There’s something about Triumph roadsters that means they’ll never go out of fashion, and the TR5 is the one to have judging by the recent demand for this quintessentially British sports car. Absolutely any inspection is welcome and viewing is highly recommended. TR5's are in very high demand and prices rising rapidly, we see this car as a sound investment and one that will grace any collection or showground. All major debit cards accepted. Free delivery within the U.K mainland.
