DESCRIPTION

1962 SUNBEAM RAPIER SERIES IIIA WITH OVERDRIVE
Finished in its wonderfully period combination of Silver Grey with contrasting Red roof and side flashes, beautifully complemented by a Red leather interior, this charming Sunbeam Rapier Series IIIA represents one of the finest examples of Rootes Group design and engineering from the golden age of British motoring.
Produced by the Rootes Group, the company behind Sunbeam, Hillman, Humber and Singer, the Rapier was conceived as a sophisticated sporting coupé for the discerning motorist. Combining stylish Michelotti-influenced design, lively performance and genuine long-distance touring capability, the Rapier quickly established itself as one of Britain’s most desirable sporting cars of the early 1960s.
Introduced in 1961, the Series IIIA retained the elegant pillarless coupé styling of the earlier Series III whilst benefiting from a number of important mechanical improvements. Engine capacity was increased to 1,592cc and a stronger crankshaft was fitted, creating a more durable and refined driving experience. Today, the Series IIIA is widely regarded by enthusiasts as one of the most desirable and usable of the early Series Rapiers.
This particular example presents beautifully and has recently emerged from enthusiast ownership, having clearly been maintained and improved regardless of cost. The car was owned by its previous custodian for over twenty years and was used exactly as Rootes intended, regularly undertaking long-distance touring events and club gatherings throughout the UK and Europe.
One particularly memorable journey saw the Rapier travel all the way to Cannes in the South of France for celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Sunbeam Alpine, a trip that perfectly demonstrates the car’s remarkable usability, comfort and dependability. Unlike many classics that spend their lives hidden away in garages, this is a car that has been thoroughly enjoyed and proven on the open road.
Adding a fascinating chapter to its history, the car was selected by the BBC for a special edition of Gardener’s World. Presenter Carol Klein drove the Rapier extensively during a ten-day filming schedule, travelling to locations around the country. Chosen specifically for its character, period charm and reliability, the car performed faultlessly throughout filming and left a lasting impression on all involved.
Mechanically the car has benefited from significant expenditure in recent years. Extensive overhaul work has included a new clutch, piston rings and bearing shells together with a fully refurbished cylinder head. Further investment has included new brakes, new tyres, new carpets and a new exhaust system, ensuring the car remains a highly usable and enjoyable classic.
The Rapier is further enhanced by the highly desirable overdrive transmission. A sought-after feature amongst enthusiasts, overdrive transforms the driving experience by providing more relaxed cruising at modern road speeds, reducing engine wear and making longer journeys significantly more enjoyable. It is a feature perfectly suited to the Rapier’s grand touring character.
In 2018 the car underwent a full repaint, restoring the bodywork to a superb standard and beautifully highlighting the elegant lines that have made the Series Rapier such a favourite amongst collectors. The brightwork, glass and interior all complement the car wonderfully, creating a striking and distinctive appearance that attracts admiration wherever it goes.
Adding further appeal, the car retains its original registration number which remains transferable. Original registrations are becoming increasingly sought after within the classic car world and represent a valuable asset in their own right, whilst also preserving the authenticity and provenance of the vehicle.
Today, early Series Rapiers enjoy an enthusiastic and loyal following supported by dedicated Rootes Group clubs and specialist organisations throughout the UK and Europe. Good examples are becoming increasingly scarce and finding a well-maintained, properly restored Series IIIA is becoming ever more difficult.
As a Historic Vehicle, this Sunbeam benefits from road tax exemption, MOT exemption and exemption from ULEZ charges. Nevertheless, for complete peace of mind, the car will be supplied with a fresh MOT prior to sale.
Stylish, rare, charismatic and backed by a fascinating history, this delightful Sunbeam Rapier Series IIIA represents an increasingly collectible British classic. Equally at home at concours events, classic car tours or simply enjoyed on a sunny weekend drive, it offers a wonderful blend of 1960s style, practicality and character.
A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most elegant and distinctive sporting coupés of its era.
