1968 MGB GT. Connaught Green with Black upholstery and white piping. An early chrome bumper MGB GT represents one of the purest expressions of Abingdon’s iconic grand tourer. Styled by Pininfarina and launched in 1965, the GT combined the proven MGB mechanical package with a beautifully proportioned fixed roof and practical rear hatch, creating a true everyday sports car. By 1968 the model had matured into a well-sorted, lively and engaging machine, still benefiting from the desirable early details and correct chrome bumper stance. This is a very honest and fundamentally solid car that retains a wealth of original character. Importantly, it still features the early clip-style seat belts, the correct banjo steering wheel and the desirable low-back seats. The front seats have been professionally retrimmed in the correct material, maintaining originality while refreshing the cabin where it matters. The result is an interior that feels authentic and period correct, yet tidy and inviting. Structurally, the car is impressively solid, which is always the key consideration with any classic monocoque MG. It runs and drives well, delivering exactly what a 1960s GT should. The driving experience remains one of the MGB’s great strengths: communicative steering, balanced handling and a wonderfully usable power delivery that encourages regular enjoyment. Recent mechanical attention includes: Carburettors rebuilt. New fuel pump and fuel lines. Electronic ignition installed for improved reliability. Fuel tank removed and cleaned. New ignition coil fitted. Brakes and suspension checked and inspected. We noted on test drive that a couple of the dashboard gauges were intermittent so maybe further investigation required.
Benefitting from sensible upgrades such as electronic ignition while retaining its classic character and appearance. Cosmetically, the paintwork shows some tired areas. It presents honestly and can be enjoyed immediately, yet there is clear scope to elevate the car cosmetically if desired. For many enthusiasts, this is a positive, offering the opportunity to improve the finish over time without having to address structural or mechanical concerns first. The MGB GT remains one of the most usable British classics available. With outstanding parts support, strong club backing and timeless styling, it is equally at home on a relaxed Sunday drive, a touring holiday or displayed at a local show.
In summary, this 1968 chrome bumper GT is a structurally strong and refreshingly honest example, retaining correct early features and benefitting from recent sensible investment. It is not over-restored, but authentic and usable, with the right fundamentals in place and the potential to take it to the next level if desired.
